Why is the EU rolling out the ETIAS program?
The purpose of ETIAS is to strengthen external border controls as well as to enhance security within the community against terrorism threats and migration risks.

With my ETIAS, am I able to travel freely in the Schengen Area without being subject to internal border controls?
With your ETIAS, you are allowed to move freely within the Schengen Area without being subject to internal border controls. However, at any time authorities of the Member States can conduct a spot check due to security purposes.
With an ETIAS, can I travel to other EU Member States which are not part of Schengen Area?
Please verify visa requirement information of the countries to which you will travel in order to determine whether you are subject to a visa for those countries.

ETIAS versus EU-visa
What is the difference between the Schengen Area and the European Union?
Schengen Area encompasses almost all of the European Union and some non-European Union countries (e.g. Norway and Switzerland). Not all EU states are part of the Schengen Area (e.g Cyprus, Croatia or Iceland are not a member state of the Schengen Area).
What is the difference between ETIAS and EU-visa?
ETIAS is an automatic authorisation system that applies for nationals of third countries who are visa-exempted such as USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and so on. The process of granting an EU-visa instead is not automated. The application is processed on a case-by- case basis. Nationals of third countries who are not visa-exempted must possess a valid entry visa in order to access to or transit through the Schengen Area.
I am not a national of one of the countries listed in the visa-waiver program but I need to transit through an airport in the Schengen area, what visa do I need?
There are three possibilities when you transit through an airport in the Schengen area. Please refer below and determine which possibilities apply to you.
You are coming from a foreign country and are transiting through an airport in the Schengen Area to travel to another airport in the Schengen Area. In this case, technically you pass border police control; you must have an entry short-stay visa for the Schengen Area.
You are coming from a foreign country and are transiting through an airport in one of the Member States to travel to an airport outside the Schengen Area without leaving the International Zone of the airport. In this case you do not enter the Schengen Area. Therefore, you are not required to possess an entry visa. However, certain nationalities are required to have a short-term visa even for transit purposes, please check Airport transit visa (ATV) for further information.
